The Department of Religious Studies, University of Pennsylvania seeks to make a tenured or tenure-track appointment in the study of Islam. The rank is open, but the candidate must have completed a Ph.D. The exact specialty could include Qur'anic Studies, Islamic Philosophy and/or Sufism. Expert knowledge of Arabic is required, and proficiency in at least one other Islamic language is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to teach introductory and comparative classes in Religious Studies as well as advanced graduate seminars. Candidates should be conversant in the methodological issues confronting scholars of religion. Senior candidates must have a proven record of publications and administrative experience.
