The ISIM conducts and promotes interdisciplinary research on social,
political, cultural, and intellectual trends and movements in contemporary
Muslim societies and communities. The ISIM was established by the
University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, Utrecht University, and the
Radboud University of Nijmegen in response to a need for further research
from social science and humanities perspectives on contemporary
developments of great social, political and cultural importance in the
Muslim world. The ISIM's research approaches are expressly
interdisciplinary and comparative, covering a large geographic range,
which includes North Africa, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central
Asia, South and South East Asia, and Muslim communities in the West. Broad
in scope, the ISIM brings together all areas of disciplinary expertise in
anthropology, sociology, political science, and religious and cultural
studies.

The ISIM is the publisher of several publications, the principle one being
the ISIM Review (formerly ISIM Newsletter). Apart from institutional news
the ISIM Review contains research articles by scholars from all over the
world. It enables its readers to follow trends in research and offers
background information on current developments and events relevant to the
study of Muslim societies and communities. The ISIM Review has a
circulation of around 8,000 worldwide and is also available online on the
ISIM website.

The editor will be responsible for the following tasks:
• soliciting and editing texts for the ISIM Review;
• co-editing occasional publications of the ISIM, such as the ISIM Papers
  Series;
• corresponding with authors on content related matters;
• corresponding with the (free-lance) language editors;
• developing an index for the ISIM Review.

All tasks are to be performed in close cooperation and consultation with
the ISIM Chairs, who supervise the ISIM publications, with the desk
editor, who provides general support and takes care of such matters as
illustrations, layout and distribution, and with the (free-lance) language
and copy editor(s).

Applicants should:
• hold a PhD degree in a discipline relevant to the ISIM profile (see
  below) or an equivalent publication record;
• have extensive knowledge of one or more regions of the Muslim World;
• be well versed in comparative social science research;
• have an excellent overview of debates taking place in and about Muslim
  societies;
• be familiar with terminologies pertinent to Muslim discourse;
• have an excellent command of English and, preferably, a working
  knowledge of French;
• have proven experience in editing academic publications;
• hold excellent communicative skills.

The ISIM offers:
• a one-year (fixed) appointment 0.6 fte (with possible extension);
• salary, based on expertise and previous experience, with a maximum of
  (0.6 x) € 4049 (salary scale 11/gross per month) according to Dutch
  University CAO;
