Conference Announcement "Assuming Cosmopolitanism: Critical Encounters between Cosmopolitanism and Development" International Conference University of Manchester Northumbria University The Open University Manchester (UK) 23-24 November 2006 __________________________________________________ Conference Convenors: Uma Kothari, Giles Mohan, Matt Smith, Helen Yanacopulos Speakers: Stuart Corbridge, Robert Fine, Vinay Gadwani, Ray Kiely, David Mosse, Jenny Robinson, Saskia Sassen, Craig Berry Conference Themes: This conference will approach critically the intersection of cosmopolitanism and international development through two themes: - Critiquing the assumed cosmopolitanism of international development theory and practice. - Investigating the ways in which taking more nuanced cosmopolitan perspectives can illuminate development theory and practice, and reciprocally, how taking a developmental perspective can inform a critical cosmopolitanism. Issues that will be discussed include: Cosmopolitanism as an ethical disposition, Cosmopolitanism and global governance, Travelling parochialism, Cosmopolitanism in place, Non-elite cosmopolitanisms.
