In the twenty-first century, democracy confronts numerous
challenges that scholars and public officials need to
comprehend. Some of the newer democracies, such as those in
Africa and Latin America, appear to be unstable, even though
several of them are moving toward consolidation.
Furthermore, established democracies in the post-industrial
world are confronting economic, social, and cultural
challenges: aging populations, unstable welfare systems, and
new immigrant groups.

In addition to these problems, international terrorism
threatens peace and freedom around the world, leading many
to question whether democracy can survive in such a hostile
environment.

Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College are hosting a
conference on January 25 - 27, 2007 that seeks to understand
the current state and future of democracy during this age of
uncertainty. Numerous issues concerning democratization are
to be addressed at our event, including the sustainability
of democracy in the developing world, challenges facing
post-industrial democracies, the impact of terrorism on
freedom, and how globalization affects democracy.
