Call for Papers "Racisms in the New World Order" International Conference Centre for Multicultural and Community Development, University of the Sunshine Coast Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives, Victoria University Caloundra, QLD (Australia) 6-7 December 2007 __________________________________________________ Since the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001, racism has developed new meanings due to government policy changes world-wide. As new security systems are put in place, social and cultural differences are highlighted and examined by policy-makers. Increasingly, racial profiling by biology is becoming less of an issue. In its place is the growing emphasis on racial profiling by values and lifestyles, placing restrictions on civil liberties and human rights across the world. The Centre for Multicultural and Community Development at the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Victoria University Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives are holding this conference with the aim of providing an arena for discourse about the instances of racism across the globe and ways to combat it. The conference is an opportunity for debate and discussion about those issues pertaining to racism, and an examination of government policies. Attendees will include delegates from Australia and around the world. A number of keynote speakers will deliver presentations aimed at stimulating debate, and representatives from a number of stakeholder groups will have the opportunity to express their points of view on racism in the present day. Conference aims - Create dialogue on theory and practice of racism - Share information on experiences of racism in a global context - Identify issues in policy and program responses to combat racism - Determine strategies and education tools to increase community awareness - Showcase best practice and innovative programs - Create an impetus for change and development - Place racism in public discourses Conference themes The themes of the 2007 conference will provide an opportunity for participants to engage with some of the challenging and fundamental questions about racisms in contemporary society. This engagement will be through the various lenses that different participants bring to the conference - for example, as researchers, policy makers, advocates and individuals who experience racism. The following themes have been established as a framework for potential conference attendees to develop conference papers. The themes will also assist in ensuring that the conference is meaningful to practice, balanced in program content and relevant to a diverse audience. - Manifestations of racism - Responses to racism - current practice of what works and what does not - Nationalism - Developing anti-racist futures - visualising alternatives for the future Important details Abstracts must reach the conference organisers by Friday 20 July 2007. All abstracts will be considered on the basis of individual merit by the Selection Committee and will be ranked in competition with all other abstracts. The Committees decision is final. Conference papers will be published as Conference Proceedings following a refereeing process. All presenters who wish to have their paper published in the Conference Proceedings must provide a written copy of the paper in MS Word or text format by Friday 26 October 2007.
