Call for Papers

"Citizenship in Wartime"
International Workshop
Institute for Advanced Studies, Tel Aviv University
Tel Aviv (Israel)
27-31 December 2007

__________________________________________________

The workshop will explore the theoretical and practical
implications of war and terror situations for the
institution of citizenship in democratic states.
Citizenship, as a concept and an institution, is a keystone
of Western democratic society, in war and peace. But in
wartimes, including low-intensity wars, democratic societies
face different challenges than the ones facing them during
peace, in areas such as human rights, the status of
minorities, immigration, the state's obligations to its
citizens, and the meaning of social solidarity.

Scholars in the fields of philosophy, political science,
sociology, history, law, labor studies and related
disciplines, who are interested in the workshop, should
email a 250-word abstract of a research paper to Prof. Noah
Lewin-Epstein by May 15, 2007. Travel funds may be
available.
