The International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture
(GCSC) at Justus Liebig University in Giessen invites
applications for

2 Junior Professorships in the Study of Culture

a) focus: cultural theory
reference number: 5-19/07

b) focus: cultural history
reference number: 4-20/07

The post will be for three years in the first instance, and
the successful candidate will be offered civil servant
status (professorial grade W1). Depending on performance,
the appointee will be offered a three-year extension.

Responsibilities:
The positions involve
- contributing to the GCSC’s research profile
- teaching two courses per semester in the context of the
  GCSC’s curriculum for PhD students
- organising (international) conferences in accordance with
  the GCSC’s academic programme
- active participation in the GCSC’s research training
  programme
- cooperating with the GCSC’s Executive Board
- mentoring PhD students.

Requirements:
We seek candidates who have completed a first-rate PhD
degree in one of the GCSC’s academic subjects (for position
a) or a first-rate PhD degree with a focus on cultural
history (for position b). For both positions, candidates
must have a current interdisciplinary research project that
fits the GCSC research profile. Any previous employment in
the German university system before or after taking the PhD
should not have exceeded six years. Candidates must have
fluency in English and German. The successful candidate will
demonstrate excellence in research and teaching.
International experience and experience with third-party
funding is advantageous.

degree certificates, a list of publications, a record of
experience in university teaching, a 10-page outline of
their research project and a 5-page proposal sketching their
projected contributions to the GCSC’s research training
