Tenure-stream Position in Islamic Political Thought
(classical and contemporary)
James Madison College, Michigan State University
East Lansing, MI (USA)

Madison is one of Michigan State's three residential
colleges and perhaps its most outstanding program in the
liberal arts. Established in 1967 and limited to an
enrollment of 1200 (in a university of more than 44,000), it
strives to combine the advantages of a small liberal arts
college with those of a gigantic research university.
Standards are high, the student body is impressive, and the
faculty is demanding. After a common first year, students
major in one or more of four multidisciplinary programs,
each of which integrates the humanities and social sciences
in the study of public affairs.

This position is located in Madison's major in Political
Theory and Constitutional Democracy (PTCD), a "great books"
program grounded in the classics of political philosophy
(but which also draws on economics, history, literature, and
political science) and in its university-wide specialization
(e..g., minor) in Muslim Studies.

The PTCD program is one of the only such undergraduate
majors in the US. It is staffed by eight tenure-stream
political philosophers and enrolls more than 300 majors. The
Muslim Studies specialization is relatively new but already
enrolls more than 100 students. Among other things, we are
eager to identify candidates who are prepared to help build
that specialization (in part, by helping to provide it with
a solid intellectual foundation).

In addition, Michigan State's Department of Political
Science is also strong in political philosophy. Its program
is staffed by four tenured political philosophers Thus
Michigan State has thirteen people (plus two post-docs) who
teach political philosophy and is an attractive place for
any young person with an interest in that area of inquiry.
