Call for Papers "The Ethical Wrongfulness of Terrorist Actions" International Conference Faculty of Philosophy, St. Paul University Ottawa, ON (Canada) 17-18 October 2008 __________________________________________________ Terrorism is a complex phenomenon open to subjective interpretations. Since the essence of terrorist action involves the intentional killing of innocent people, then any self-serving interpretation of the justifiability and permissibility of killing leads to dangerous convictions. Viewed from this perspective, the questions raised as to the ethical wrongfulness of terrorist actions are countless. However, some of the most critical questions are: Why are terrorist actions ethically wrong? What kind of moral principles serve in the condemnation of terrorism? How can we distinguish between terrorist actions and morally acceptable violence such as a war of self-defense? As the second in a series on ‘ethics and international relations’, this conference will concentrate on the wrongfulness of terrorist actions in either domestic or the international scene. Scholars, professors, ethicists, political and defense analysts, human rights activists, journalists, students, and all other interested thinkers are invited to participate. The proceedings of the conference will be published under the title: The Ethical Wrongfulness of Terrorist Actions. Please send an abstract, maximum length of 250 words, not later than May 30th, 2008 to Mahmoud Masaeli.
