Call for Papers

"Asian and Comparative Philosophy"
International Conference
Australasian Society of Asian and Comparative Philosophy
(ASACP)
University of Melbourne
Melbourne (Australia)
5-6 July 2008

__________________________________________________

After a few years of intermittent and sporadic activity, a
number of us here in Melbourne are trying to revive the
ASACP (Australasian Society of Asian and Comparative
Philosophy). As a part of our effort, we are organising a 2
day conference on 5th (Saturday) and 6th (Sunday) July 2008.

The venue will be at Melbourne University’s International
House, Greycourt Theatrette, 241 Royal Parade, Parkville,
Victoria 3052, Australia, which is not far from the
university’s main campus.

We are planning 5 or 6 panels with specific themes and
covering different areas. It is likely to be 3 panels each
day, with larger ones in the mornings and 2 smaller ones in
the afternoons and evenings, finishing around 7 pm each
evening. It is our hope that this arrangement would give the
conference more depth as well as catering for the diversity
of the field. Papers are 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for
clarification, and a general discussion at the end of the
panel.

Themes for the panels are:

1. Emotions and Feelings (in memoriam and to honour the late
Robert (Bob) C. Solomon): (Kathleen Higgins will present
key-note paper on the life and work of Solomon)

2. Heidegger, Nietzsche and Asian Philosophy;

3. Comparative Hermeneutics;

4. Variations on the Middle Way;

5. Indian Philosophy (possible themes are “Yoga” or
“Cognition”);

6. Chinese Philosophy (a theme may emerge depending on
submissions).

At this stage, we are seeking expressions of interest to
attend the conference and to present a paper. We apologise
for the short notice. But we hope that you overlook our
discourtesy for the sake of promoting scholarship in the
area of comparative and Asian philosophy, and accept our
invitation.
