Conference Announcement "The Quest for Black Citizenship in the Americas" 94th Annual ASALH Meeting Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) Cincinnati, OH (USA) 30 September - 4 October 2009 __________________________________________________ The Association for the Study of African American Life and History is soliciting papers for its 94th Annual Conference. The conference theme, "The Quest for Black Citizenship in the Americas," foregrounds various concepts of citizenship. A century ago, an interracial group of Americans joined together and formed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Two generations after emancipation, a tide of racism had betrayed the promise of first-class citizenship for African Americans, which reflected an ongoing struggle for civil rights throughout the Americas. Conference submissions will address the origins, evolution, and implications of citizenship in the African Diaspora, particularly in the Caribbean Islands, Latin America, and the United States. Though panels for alternate topics will be gladly received, preference will be given to those submissions that engage broad and varied aspects of the conference theme. Scholars from all disciplines have been invited to present research on African and African American life, history, thought, and culture from all parts of the Diaspora. As contemporary landscapes shift in national and international politics, we look forward to these important and necessary discussions about complex issues of citizenship - past, present, and future - for people of African descent.
