Call for Papers "Orientalism at War" Interdisciplinary Conference Nuffield College, University of Oxford Oxford (UK) 17-19 June 2010 __________________________________________________ This programme seeks to convene scholars from divergent disciplines for a three day conference that examines how Orientalist and colonial discourses shape war and are shaped by war both in historical and contemporary contexts. A selection of the papers from the conference will be collected and submitted for review for publication as an edited volume. We interpret our theme broadly, but we ask that papers address the implications of Orientalism, and of colonial discourse more generally, in violent conflict. We are particularly interested in the ways in which war is both structured by, as well as restructures, Orientalist standpoints. That is, we want to address not only Orientalist constructions of conflict, but also the generative powers of war to reshape its social and political contexts, including the Orientalist discourses that give rise to conflict. Applicants interested in presenting at the conference are welcome to submit a prospective title and 200-word abstract by 4 December 2009. Participation in the conference will be confirmed by 30 January 2010. The programme may be able to provide partial funding for applicants selected to present. Individuals interested in attending or discussing at the conference are also invited to contact us. However, funding will be reserved for those presenting papers at the conference.
