Call for Papers "Human Rights Abuses: Coming to Terms with the Past, Transitional Justice and Democratization" International Conference Working Groups on Human Rights and Democracy Research, German Political Science Association Institut for Political Sciences, RWTH Aachen Aachen (Germany) 26-27 November 2010 __________________________________________________ The century of coming to terms with human rights abuses, injustice and state violence through mechanism of transitional justice and reconciliation processes has just begun – as already stated in the UN International Year of Reconciliation 2009. To date, the number of state and non-state actors and organizations involved in reconciliation processes in Africa, Europe, South East Asia or Latin America has accelerated. Epistemic communities from different academic disciplines and branches publish and report their studies and research work on a monthly basis. In Political Sciences we aim at analyzing how different political systems and societies come to terms with their violent or dictatorial past during transition processes. Human rights abuses range from torture, arbitrary killings and imprisonment, expropriation, genocide, disappearances, racism, terrorization of society, discrimination till deprivation of personal development. The UN vanBoven-principles have stated a large number of human rights abuses to be dealt with in the process of transitional justice and reconciliation already in 2005. The joint conference and CFP organized by the German Political Science Association working groups on Human Rights and Democracy Research aims at dealing with country cases as well as with the systematic, theoretical and empirical approach to study transitional justice and reconciliation processes. The papers should focus on how processes of coming to terms with the past, transitional justice and reconciliation impact the functioning of democratic institutions, the quality of democracy and democratization in societies in transition. All paper givers are asked to particular bridge the aspects of human rights abuses, transitional justice and reconciliations processes, democratization and democracy.
