Call for Papers Theme: Lost and Found in Traducture Subtitle: International Development in Translation Type: Interdisciplinary Colloquium Institution: Sidensi IKM Emergent Location: Windsor (United Kingdom) Date: 27.–29.3.2011 Deadline: 30.3.2011 __________________________________________________ The Sidensi/IKM Emergent international interdisciplinary colloquium will address critical issues in traducture by bringing together translation and knowledge management practitioners and networks, researchers, policy makers, advocacy agents, academics, and end users to share insights, experiences, strategies, knowledge, techniques and methodologies. The colloquium seeks to engage with how the question of power plays out in the translation processes and its implications for social justice in knowledge management. The notion 'traducture' emanates from the theoretical and empirical premises that multiple knowledges, values and cultures do not always translate in equivalence,nor do communities interact in equal relationships of power, nor are the modes, means and processes of knowledge management the same or similar within or across cultures. In the international development context, the notion goes further to posit that these processes and relationships can at times be "asymmetrical". The colloquium seeks to explore the complexities this presents to knowledge production and management in intercultural contexts though highlighting in/commensurability within and between source and target cultures and how these are managed through translation in interdisciplinary and multiple knowledge contexts. Themes and topics covered include: - Translation/traducture as theories/tools of knowledge management and methodologies in development practice - Translation and social justice - The value of southern, local and indigenous knowledge production and practice - The role of research and teaching in innovating existing practices in development - Examples and case studies of innovative thinking and/or practice - Translation/traducture of endogenous and exogenous knowledges - Translation/traducture: interpretation ethics/standards and accountability - The relationship between contexts of knowledge production, management, enunciation and reception - Translation/traducture: information technology - Curriculum, training and professionalization in development/translation/traducture - Developing communication and dissemination tools - Translation/traducture in ICT for development - Identity, subjectivity and agency in translation - Translation/traducture and power - Orature, new media and technology Participants are invited to submit 200-250 word presentation proposals for the colloquium by March 30th 2011. Presenters, non-presenters and non-participants are also invited to submit abstracts for consideration for a post-symposium publication by the end of May and full papers written papers should be submitted by the end of August.
