Call for Papers Theme: Actors of Intercultural Dialogue Type: 2nd International Colloquium for Intercultural Philosophy Institution: polylog: Forum for Intercultural Philosophy Forum Scientiarum, University of Tübingen Location: Tübingen (Germany) Date: 28.–30.7.2011 Deadline: 31.5.2011 __________________________________________________ From 28 to 30 July 2011, polylog is organising its 2nd International Colloquium for Intercultural Philosophy, in cooperation with the Forum Scientiarum of University of Tübingen. The topic of the colloquium is: Actors of Intercultural Dialogue The question how to deal with the plurality of cultures is disputed on a theoretical as well as on a practical level. When we deal with interculturality we have to face the challenges that go along with dialogues, polylogues, understanding, appreciation, tolerance, empathy as well as the recognition of difference and alterity. In most cases it remains unsettled who really is acting in those dialogues and processes of understanding and appreciation, or who is acknowledging difference and alterity. Is it single persons, small groups or even entire cultural entities? Be it that single persons are the actors in the intercultural dialogue, it then has to be shown in which way they are legitimised to speak for an entire culture. Will different representatives of one specific culture not represent this culture in different ways? Furthermore: Do people who are part of a cultural tradition overview the bases, the history or even future developments of their own culture? With regard to groups the problem will arise in a similar way; entire societies, however, are no collective subjects who could engage as such in a concrete dialogue. The question about the subject that engages in the intercultural dialogue, therefore, makes it necessary to reconsider the idea of interculturality as a whole. Is it, at the very first place, right to presume different cultural entities which co-exist as a plurality of singularities? If so, how to deal then with postcolonial cultures who often are somehow in between things and searching for identity? Do such identities even exist? And if so, how could they become manifest? The colloquium aims at discussing these questions from a plurality of different perspectives and disciplines. The following topics are invited for papers; they should, however, focus on the question about the actors of an intercultural dialogue; further perspectives are welcome: - Notion of subjectivity - Notion of culture - Philosophy of dialogue - Postcolonial situation - Legitimation and claim to power - Identity and difference - Conceptions of alterity - Interculturality and transculturality - Historicity - Orality The colloquium aims in particular at PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and younger scholars in Philosophy and related disciplines, providing an opportunity for academic interchange and a forum for the presentation and discussion of research projects. Papers of non-European scholars are invited particularly.
