The primary focus of this 2-day international conference is on the
relationship and complexities that exist between our notions of
citizenship within a globalized world, and the means by which
universalistic and/or particularistic ethical systems and structures
“fit” into a multicultural globe. Going across the boundaries of
cultures, nations, and academic disciplines, we are seeking
contributions that shed light and provide diverse perspectives on the
ethical quandaries that exist in being both a citizen of a particular
place as well as a “citizen” of the world. As an interdisciplinary
conference, we welcome submissions from across the spectrum of
academic fields, including political theory, history, sociology,
anthropology, geography, linguistics, philosophy, ethics, law,
engineering, the natural sciences, and cultural and religious
studies. We especially encourage contributions from graduate students
and scholars working in non-western and/or underrepresented regions.
As Qatar is a veritable laboratory for of the connection of
globalization and multiculturalism, Doha provides the preeminent
locale for this discussion.

Some of the broad questions that the conference will address are:
What is the relationship of being a good citizen and being a good
human in western and non-western traditions? How does the “shrinking”
of the world affect the production and/or interpretation of domestic
and international law? Are global and national citizenships always
compatible? What ethical obligations operate upon scholars when they
seek to understand, or be understood, by other societies? What are
the ethical and sociopolitical implications of the global spread of
English for other languages and cultures? Does globalization require
us to re-formulate practices of citizenship in ways that do justice
to the increasingly complex multicultural circumstances of national
politics worldwide?

The conference will include panels and discussions on:

- Historical perspectives on global citizenship
- Cosmopolitanism and ethical citizenship
- Citizenship rights and international law
- Professional ethics and multiculturalism
- Rethinking national / regional citizenship in a globalized world

  ethics
