Call for Papers Theme: Power and Participation in the Age of Big Data Type: 8th Global Studies Conference Institution: Common Ground Publishing Imperial College London Location: London (United Kingdom) Date: 20.–21.7.2015 Deadline: 12.4.2014 __________________________________________________ Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, posters or colloquia are invited for the Eighth Global Studies Conference being held at Imperial College London in London, UK, from 20-21 July 2015. We welcome proposals from a variety of disciplines and perspectives that will contribute to the conference discourse. We also encourage faculty and research students to submit joint proposals for paper presentations or colloquia. 2015 SPECIAL FOCUS: The Global Studies Conference is excited to announce 'Power and Participation in the Age of Big Data' as the Special Focus of the 2015 conference. In The New Digital Age: Reshaping the Future of People, Nations and Business, Executive Chairman of Google Eric Schmidt and Director of Google Ideas Jared Cohen present a bold vision for the digital age. At the heart of their vision is the project of "full connectivity" (Schmidt 2013 p. 34). For Schmidt and Cohen, the project of "full connectivity" engenders the promise of more efficient markets, increased productivity, and useful tools for enlarged democratic action. Within this context, Schmidt and Cohen claim that the Internet is a historically specific social, political, and economic phenomenon. The Internet, they argue, "could ultimately be seen as the realization of the classic international relations theory of an anarchic, leaderless world" (Schmidt 2013 p. 83). The special focus of the 2015 Global Studies Conference centers on their claim and presents the following questions: how do we make sense of this "leaderless world?" What can the digital age and its communication technologies teach us about the future of order in global life? The conference will address the above questions with an interdisciplinary approach through keynote speakers, garden sessions, workshops, and parallel sessions. CONFERENCE THEMES: Proposals are invited that address issues of globalization through one of the following themes: Theme 1: Economy and Trade Theme 2: Politics, Power, and Institutions Theme 3: Society and Culture Theme 4: Resources and Environment 2015 Special Focus: Power and Participation in the Age of Big Data Presenters may also choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed Global Studies Journal. If you are unable to attend the conference, you may still become a member of the community and submit your article for peer review and possible publication, upload an online presentation, and enjoy subscriber access to the journal. Proposals for in-person presentations should be submitted by 12 APRIL 2014 (title and short abstract). Proposals submitted after this day will be accommodated in non-themed sessions at the conference or are eligible for community membership registrations (no attendance at conference required with community membership presentations).
