Call for Papers Theme: The Future of Human Dignity Type: International Conference Institution: Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Utrecht University Location: Utrecht (Netherlands) Date: 11.–13.10.2016 Deadline: 27.5.2016 __________________________________________________ Human dignity has a future. It is clear that – despite accusations about its emptiness or redundancy – human dignity is a central part of our moral and legal vocabulary and it will continue to shape our understanding of human rights, global justice, and normative theory. However, if it is to retain its critical power, and if it is to continue to guide the development of human rights law, its application to new social, technological, and political challenges must be justified and explored. This conference seeks to open new pathways in understanding human dignity and seeks to explore the expansion of human dignity to new and emerging social problems. Confirmed keynotes: Christopher McCrudden (Belfast), Deryck Beyleveld (Durham), Avishai Margalit (Jerusalem), Barbara Herman(LA), Marcus Düwell (Utrecht), Katrin Flickschuh (London), Kenneth Westphal (Istanbul), Rutger Claassen (Utrecht),Antoine Buyse (Utrecht), Alon Harel (Jerusalem), Julia Tao (Hong Kong) The conference organisers invite papers on: - Theories of human dignity and human rights - Institutional enforcement of human rights and human dignit The organisers particularly welcome papers engaging with innovations in our understanding of human dignity.
