The Institute for Advanced Studies plans to host a two-week summer
programme on The Knowledge Society and the Challenges of Doing
Research in Africa: Theoretical Perspectives and Methodological
Approaches. Designed for advanced doctoral students and postdoctoral
scholars, the programme will take place between July 24 and August 5,
2017.

Programme of Study

The goal of the summer residential programme is to facilitate and
foster innovative research of young scholars in the academy,
particularly those in the humanities and social sciences, by exposing
them to relevant theoretical and methodological tools in their
respective disciplines. The Institute’s summer programme will be
anchored by an impressive number of senior scholars from Nigeria and
abroad engaging a wide range of themes and issues that are designed
to deepen the understanding of research and teaching mission in the
academy.

The facilitators will lead discussions on various conceptual,
methodological and theoretical topics central to their various fields
of interest, including tools of research in the fields of humanities
and social sciences, networking techniques and ethical principles of
the profession. Each invited doctoral and postdoctoral fellow will be
expected to work on a project in his or her current research and to
develop new networks of scholarship which are critical for career
success. In addition to attending lectures and workshops, fellows
will also conduct group projects and participate in sponsored field
trips to important sites. Throughout the programme, the participants
will be required to demonstrate evidence of strong commitment to
research and teaching and show the ability to work effectively with
visiting faculty.

The premise for this initiative is to build on the collective vision
of the many talented students and scholars in the academy whose
research potentials can be further enhanced by an exposure to
in-depth learning in the institute. Through this rigorous process of
interaction and interdisciplinary engagement with the impressive mass
of senior scholars we have assembled for this project, we are
convinced that the fellows will derive maximum benefit from the two –
week institute. We envisage that the vision of the Institute will
sharpen the thinking of fellows and empower them to make innovative
contributions to their respective fields in the humanities and social
sciences.

Accommodation

The summer institute will hold at the Regional Centre for Training in
Aerospace Surface (RECTAS), located on the premises of the Obafemi
Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria and the fellows will be housed
at a Guest House located on campus. Applicants must commit to staying
in residence for the entire two-week duration of the institute in
order to fully immerse themselves in the rigorous scholarly
environment.
