Call for Papers Theme: Cultural Heritage and the Ethics of War Type: International Conference Institution: Homerton College, University of Cambridge Location: Cambridge (United Kingdom) Date: 18.–19.9.2019 Deadline: 14.1.2019 __________________________________________________ The Heritage in War Project invites paper proposals (in the form of 800 word abstracts) for the conference described below. The conference is part of an project, funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and led by Helen Frowe and Derek Matravers, exploring the moral value of cultural heritage and how we ought to incorporate this value into our accounts of the ethics of war. Whilst some work has been done on these topics by people working in cognate areas, few philosophers have engaged with these sorts of questions. The aim of this conference is to begin to develop a robust account of the status of heritage in war by exploring philosophical work on such matters as incommensurability and incomparability, the nature and status of cultural heritage, risk imposition, and the reconstruction and replacement of damaged or destroyed heritage. Questions include (but are not limited to): When it might be permissible for soldiers to cause collateral damage to a heritage site? How we should compare damage to heritage to other types of harm? Is it justified to divert resources towards cultural property protection rather than using those resources to protect civilians and their homes? What is the value of cultural heritage and how does it stack up against other sorts of value? Keynote papers will be given by Simon Blackburn, Ruth Chang, and Victor Tadross. Please send your abstracts, as an attachment in either Word or PDF, to Joshua Thomas ([email protected]) by 14th January 2019.
