Call for Applications Theme: Philosophy of Law Type: PLUSS 2020: Philosophy of Law Undergraduate Summer School Institution: Sage School of Philosophy, Cornell University Location: Ithaca, NY (USA) Date: 21.–27.6.2020 Deadline: 22.12.2019 __________________________________________________ We are excited to announce Cornell University's Philosophy of Law Undergraduate Summer School. PLUSS 2020 invites members of historically marginalized groups to participate in a week-long summer reading school, which will be divided into two sections: - Discussion: Informed and sophisticated discussion concerning a number of historic American and Canadian legal decisions (and/or dissenting opinions) and their continued impact. - Workshop: The opportunity for participants to improve their writing samples through dynamic group discussion and close reading of one another’s work. Discussion During the first half of the week, participants will discuss topics such as the devaluation of Black bodies in the law, legal regulation of Arab bodies post- 9/11, undocumented migration and border detention centres, the (un)equal standing of women and gender minorities in the law, and the effective erasure of disabled bodies in public and academic spheres. Provided readings will include a relevant historical decision coupled with related philosophical article(s), and such discussions will be enriched by leading scholars invited to join our students for an afternoon to discuss both their academic work as well as their personal experience as a member of a historically marginalized group working in legal philosophy. Workshop The second section of the summer school will be dedicated to preparing participants for graduate studies in the philosophy of law. Two months prior to PLUSS 2020 (May 1st, 2020), participants will be asked to submit a philosophical paper of approximately 15-20 pages on any topic in the moral, socio-political, or legal philosophy to be workshopped. Each participant will, in turn, receive one paper for which they will be the designated commentator. The first two days of the workshop will be dedicated entirely to writing samples, presenting commentaries and discussing possible improvements to each writing sample. Following this, the third day will be dedicated to academic statements, clarifying general expectations and providing time for participants to begin drafting such statements. Invited Speaker Anita Allen Professor of Law and Professor of Philosophy, University of Pennsylvania Law School The first African American woman to hold both a Ph.D. in Philosophy and J.D., Dr. Allen is an internationally recognized expert on privacy law and ethics. The Summer School is open to advanced undergraduate students and Master's students. Applications open September 1st, 2019 and close on December 22nd, 2019.
