Call for Applications Theme: Indigenous Languages in Philosophy Type: MA Bursary Institution: Department of Philosophy, University of Johannesburg Location: Johannesburg (South Africa) Date: 2020-2021 Deadline: 25.10.2019 __________________________________________________ The Department of Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg invites outstanding young philosophers starting their MA in 2020, to apply for a two-year MA bursary. The funding comes from a Templeton Grant for the Geography of Philosophy Project. The project explores cultural differences in the concepts of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding across nine geographical regions, and is pursued in collaboration with nine interdisciplinary teams around the world. The bursary covers: - tuition fees for a full time Master’s degree, to be pursued at UJ starting February 2020, renewable for 2021 subject to performance; - a research assistantship. The eligible candidate will: - have completed Honours in Philosophy by December 2019; - have obtained 75% + average for his/her Honours modules; - be willing to work under the co-supervision of Prof Veli Mitova and Ms Dimpho Takane Maponya; and be a research assistant to Dr Josien Reijer. - is looking to pursue an MA on the application and development of indigenous languages in Philosophy. Some of the ways in which this research can be conducted is through the investigation of a particular indigenous language, a particular concept, a word or words from one or more indigenous South African languages.
