Call for Papers Theme: Ethics and Cosmopolitan Justice in the Early Modern Iberian School of Peace and Latin American Scholastics Type: International Meeting Institution: Research Group Thought and Jesuit Tradition in the Early Modernity (PEMOSJ), Renaissance Society of America Department of Humanities and Philosophy, Universidad Loyola Andalucía Location: Seville (Spain) – Online Date: 12.–13.5.2022 Deadline: 7.3.2022 __________________________________________________ (Versión española abajo) The Research Group Thought and Jesuit Tradition in the Early Modernity (PEMOSJ), as an associate organization of The Renaissance Society of America, asks for participation in its next meeting that will be held in Seville on May 12 and 13 2022 in hybrid format (face-to-face and virtual). The meeting is divided in the following sections: - Section 1: Ethics and Cosmopolitan Justice in the Iberian School of Peace and Latin American Scholastics: Contributions of Jesuit Thought. The aim of this session is to analyse relevant moral sources, trying to assess the importance of the inputs of Francisco Suárez (1548-1617) and other Jesuits in Ethics, the Practical Reason and Justice among different people and within the Universal Human Community (16th to 18th centuries). Our guiding question is linked with the ethical foundation of their social proposals. Given this, their innovative legal schemes concerning the rights of native communities, the necessary respect for other communities and for freedom, can’t be fully understood without considering an ethical theory. Their ethical reflections led them to conceive and recognise the real and legal existence of a universal and supra-governmental community that implies the presence of moral rules detached with national governments and rooted in human dignity, natural equity and Common Good. - Section 2: Interculturality, Dimensions of Sustainability and the Common Good: Jesuit thought and Ibero-American scholastics in dialogue. The Jesuit authors and the institutional acts of the Society of Jesus in the New World, such as the Missions and the Reductions, are fundamental to Scholastic Humanism and have a key role in understanding the intellectual and social development in Colonial America. At the same time, these acts and genuine interactions with the natives, that we can analyse using their own written sources, drive us to ponder the quality and implications of the ethical and civilizational proposals developed by the Jesuits. Our research question is if we can conceive the Reductions as a social and cultural cosmopolitan model that implies inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogues. Also, we wonder if it could be possible to use the Reductions as an indicative figure that shows us how we can face the social challenges of our time (linked with cultural and religious diversity) and how we can answer contemporary social and ecological issues. The deadline for the submission of the abstracts (up to 400 words) is 7th March. Abstracts must have the following structure: 1. Section. 2. Title. 3. Keywords. 4. Summary of the proposal. 5. Main bibliographic references. The text must be sent in one single PDF file using the following link: submissions. Acceptance will be notified on 31st March 2022. Abstracts may be sent in Spanish or English. The organization keeps the right to change the chosen section of an abstracts if necessary. If your abstract is accepted, the deadline for sending the full text (up to 8.000 words, including footnotes and bibliography) is 10th May 2022. Full texts can be sent in Spanish or English. Full texts, after a double-blind review, may be published in journals such as Cauriensia or Archivo Teológico Granadino. El encuentro se divide en las dos secciones siguientes: - Sección 1: Ética y justicia cosmopolita en la Escuela Ibérica de la Paz y la escolástica iberoamericana: contribuciones del pensamiento jesuita. El objetivo es estudiar las fuentes morales relevantes para valorar el aporte de Francisco Suárez (1548-1617) y de otros jesuitas en el campo de la razón práctica, la ética y la justicia entre pueblos y entre los miembros de la comunidad humana universal (siglos XVI-XVIII). La pregunta de investigación es sobre la fundamentación ética de sus propuestas sociales. En este sentido, las innovadoras propuestas jurídicas relativas a los derechos de las comunidades nativas, el necesario respeto a las demás culturas y la libertad humana, no pueden entenderse en su totalidad sin la teoría ética. Las reflexiones éticas los llevaron a concebir y reconocer la existencia fáctica y normativa de una comunidad universal que implica la existencia de reglas morales desvinculadas de la soberanía nacional y arraigadas en la dignidad del ser humano, el Bien Común y la equidad natural. - Sección 2: Interculturalidad, dimensiones de la sostenibilidad y bien común: el pensamiento jesuita y la escolástica iberoamericana en diálogo. Los autores jesuitas, y las realizaciones institucionales de la orden jesuita en el Nuevo Mundo como las misiones y reducciones (XVI-XVIII), constituyen una parte fundamental del humanismo escolástico para entender el desarrollo intelectual y social en la América colonial. A su vez, esas realizaciones e interacciones reales con los pueblos originarios, que podemos calibrar a través de las propias fuentes producidas por los pueblos originarios, ponen a prueba la calidad y el significado real de las propuestas morales del magisterio jesuita y de su propuesta civilizatoria. La pregunta de investigación es si es posible concebir las Reducciones y Misiones como un modelo social y cultural cosmopolita que conduce al diálogo intercultural e interreligioso, y, también, si es posible utilizar las Reducciones y Misiones como un patrón inspirador que nos enseñe cómo podemos enfrentar y resolver los desafíos sociales de nuestro tiempo, derivados de la diversidad cultural y religiosa, así como de cómo podemos encontrar soluciones a los problemas sociales y ecológicos contemporáneos. La decisión de aceptación o rechazo de las propuestas se enviará antes del 31 de marzo. Los resúmenes pueden ser enviados tanto en castellano como en inglés. Los organizadores se reservan el derecho de cambiar la sección de una propuesta cuando se considere adecuado. Para los resúmenes aceptados, el plazo para enviar los textos completos (máximo 8.000 palabras contando notas y bibliografía) finaliza el 10 de mayo de 2022. Los textos completos pueden ser enviados tanto en castellano como en inglés. Los textos finales, tras una previa revisión de pares ciegos, optarán a ser publicados en revistas como Cauriensia o Archivo Teológico Granadino.
