I don't know if this helps any, but on my linux box a session 
might look something like this...

linux2> rlogin dec_unix1
dec_unix3> export TERM=xterm
dec_unix3> cache
...

This is assuming that you are using X-windows and one of the 
Xterm emulators for your terminal window.  When I telnet to
Cache on an NT box, the Xterm seems to work okay for apps 
that think they are writing to a  vt220 screen.  The only 
problem I have had so far is with keyboard mappings.  The
function keys don't map correctly. I know that there is a 
way to set up the mappings, but it has never been that
high a priority to find out how it is done.
