ahh . . .  but if you turn off background printing, then the colour 
does NOT print. - I know this because we put a bgcolor on our pages to 
make the print easier to see in bright sunlight conditions. if we left 
the option "print background" turned on, then there would be lots of 
ink on the paper. 

once the image has been downloaded to the local cache, then the 
performance overhead is not high
