That depends mainly on how fast your network is.

After the first pass, yes, they may be cached.

But search is a different beast than accessing the occasional 
patient who is away from his home center.

For just one remote patient, the performance appears nearly equal.

For a brute force query (table scan), it could be better to 
launch the query on the remote server especially if far more 
records are searched than are selected.
