Save time of insert to db.

I know this is very simple.  I definately a noob, and have tried to find 
it in the docos, but can't seem to ask the right questions.

I have a InsertedTimeStamp property of type %TimeStamp that I wish to 
have populated automagically the first time the object is saved.  How 
simple is that!  But for some reason nothing I've tried works.
