Mike,
Be aware that when cache purges the journal files isn't just deleting
the physical files,
it also keeps track on ^SYS about the history of each file. Make sure
that the existing
journal files matches with the information you have on ^SYS.
As Seppo said cache purges the files when you re-start the engine, but I
guess there
must be some entry point on the JRNUTIL routine to make a right manual
purge.
