Monday, 25 January 2010 EDITORIAL Bin Laden's delusion OSAMA BIN LADEN has allegedly made a recording claiming responsibility for the attempted bombing of the Detroit-bound airliner on Dec. 25 last year. It is impossible to tell at this point whether there is any validity to what the voice on the tape says or, for that matter, it is definitively Bin Laden's voice. Analysts have already weighed in on the tape, opining that it represents an attempt by the founder of Al-Qaeda to show the world that he is in control of the organization's activities around the world, even if it seems that some off-shoots are operating on their own. He wants to claim responsibility for the planning and not just give his approval for far-flung operations after they have been launched. Osama Bin Laden, of course, deserves no space on this earth, but his rationale for his continued operations against the civilized world is particularly chilling and infuriatingly irresponsible and absolutely counter-productive. He claims now that attacks against the United States and the world at large will continue until the security of the Palestinians is guaranteed. In other words, Bin Laden tries to project himself as a great Arab leader whose real concern is for his downtrodden brothers fighting for a state alongside Israel. Certainly, the Palestinians need all the help they can get but having Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda on your side is no way to sway public opinion. In fact, with all the intricacies and competing factions within the entire Palestinian conflict, the last thing the Palestinian side needs is the support of Al-Qaeda. Osama Bin Laden is most certainly one of the most hated persons on earth and justifiably so. He is a mass murderer of enormous proportions and has wrong-headedly devoted his life to death and destruction under the false delusion that he is advancing the cause of Islam. The fact is that Al-Qaeda advances the cause of no reasonable human being. It is an organization borne of hatred. It is bloodthirsty. Its members are murderers.
