Missing Poso Policemen Found Dead Farouk Arnaz | October 16, 2012 Two police officers who went missing in Poso, Central Sulawesi, have been found stabbed to death. “The two police officers who were missing in Poso have been found dead and buried in one hole with wounds on their necks, presumably caused by a sharp weapon,” National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said on Tuesday night. The duo, First Brig. Andi Sapa and Brig. Sudirman, were found in a forested area near Tamanjeka hamlet in Poso’s Masani village. They were to investigate a suspected militant training camp on Oct. 8, the last day police, friends or family heard from them. “Their remains are being taken to Poso hospital,” Boy said. Tamanjeka is the base camp for military training of the radical group Jamaah Anshoru Tauhid (JAT). According to a source with the National Police’s anti-terror unit Densus 88, the two officers were gathering information related to a terrorist training camp in the area allegedly run by Santoso, a man on Densus 88’s most-wanted list. Police have identified Santoso as a master recruiter, trainer and a member of JAT, though the organization insists he is no longer affiliated. Poso has been a hotbed for terrorist activity since a surge of sectarian violence between Christians and Muslims left thousands dead and wounded in the early 2000s. Sporadic violence continues to plague the district. Authorities claim that the region has now become a training ground for Muslim militants and young terrorists who stage occasional attacks on police stations and banks. In August, a 27-year-old farmer was gunned down in a shooting that left another injured. On Oct. 9, unknown assailants bombed a church and the home of a Christian public employee in an attack that came one day after police arrested an alleged terrorist in Poso.
