Though memories of the communal violence that left 14 dead almost two weeks ago
are still fresh in people's minds, police said on Friday that new clashes
erupted between two villages in Central Lampung.

According to police, 12 houses were burned, but no injuries have been reported
yet.

The confrontation on Thursday pitted residents of Kesumadadi village in the
Bekri subdistrict against people from Buyut Udik in the neighboring subdistrict
of Gunung Sugih. The conflict was allegedly ignited by a cow theft that took
place in Kesumadadi on Oct 18, Herry Setyawan, the head of the Central Lampung
district police, said.

Authorities took no chances. The district deputy chief, Mustofa, immediately
ordered the evacuation of women, the elderly and children from the villages
involved in the conflict, while joint forces of police and military units were
deployed in the area.

Police suspect the violence was a follow up to the Oct. 18 incident in which
Khairil Anwar, a 29-year-old resident of Buyut Udik was caught allegedly trying
to steal cows in Kesumadadi. An angry mob proceeded to kill him and set him on
fire.

Herry said that Khairil was discovered running through a rice field behind the
house of someone who had just discovered that his three cows were missing from
their stall.

On Thursday afternoon, hundreds of people from Buyut Udik, armed with an
assortment of knives and machetes, suddenly attacked Kesumadadi, causing chaos
and a traffic congestion on the main highway passing the area

A tight security presence in the area has prevented the violence from spreading.
