The Ministry of Education and Culture is working to include scouting as an official component of school curricula in the first 12 years of formal education, an official with the ministry said on Friday. Kadarmanta Baskara Aji, the head of the youth and sports office of Yogyakarta, stated that education authorities believe scouting provides good character building skills for students. “The Education and Culture Ministry is currently conducting trial runs in select classrooms to determine whether or not scouting should be incorporated into curricula. If the results are deemed positive, then scouting will be introduced during the 2013/2014 school year,” Kadarmanta said. He added that during the past three years, scouting has been taught in Yogyakarta in all levels of schooling preceding university. Therefore, we have started introducing scouting in schools and youth organizations,” he said. He said he hoped that with more widespread scout programs more teachers would become available. Kadarmanta stated that scouting not only teaches students cognitive skills, but also provides invaluable experiential learning under the guidance of teachers. “Study locations outside of the classroom are good for training the student’s psychomotoric skills,” he added [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
