Religious Affairs Ministry Weighs Buying Airbus A380s for Hajj
Markus Junianto Sihaloho | January 30, 2013

The Religious Affairs Ministry is mulling the purchase of multiple Airbus A380
aircraft to tamp down costs for Indonesian hajj pilgrims.

Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said his office was considering
buying three or four airplanes, claiming they could help cut hajj pilgrimage
costs by up to 40 percent.

“There’s a plan to purchase airplanes; we’re exploring Airbus and Boeing,”
Suryadharma said, adding that the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger
airliner, was among the options being considered.

Airbus A380s can accommodate a maximum of 853 passengers, but typically seat
525.

“We might purchase three or four airplanes, as long as they’re not too
expensive,” he told journalists on Wednesday after a meeting to discuss the
plane with lawmakers in Jakarta.

Indonesia’s hajj pilgrims to Mecca number some 200,000 every year, with the
Religious Affairs Ministry tasked with coordinating the trips.

Suryadharma also said the ministry was exploring a partnership with an airline
in order to support operations of the aircraft and enable them to produce
profits outside of the annual hajj season.
