Four civilians are dead in the latest shooting in Papua, which claimed the
lives of eight Indonesia soldiers.

The civilians, identified as Johanis Palimbung, Uli, Markus Renden and Rudi
Lallo, were construction workers. They were on their way to the local airstrip
with the military personnel when they were ambushed by unknown armed men.

“They were on their way to Timika that day for security reasons,” one of the
victims’ family representatives, Speedy Paereng told The Jakarta Post on
Friday.

Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. I Gede Sumertha Jaya said four other civilians
were injured in the shootings.

Member of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Paulus Sumino believes
that the shootings were related to the Puncak regential election.

“The shooting is intended to disrupt the final phase of the local election
process,” he said.(dic)
