The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Jakarta | Thu, March 14 2013, 4:09 PM

Rasyid Amrullah Rajasa, son of Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa,
begged judges on Thursday to set him free.

"I beg and hope that the judges will set me free or rule a fair verdict for
me," he said in his defense statement at East Jakarta District Court as quoted
by Antara news agency.

He said that he was deeply traumatized and filled with remorse by the accident,
which he considered to be an act of God.

Rasyid said that he was in the process of finishing his studies in London, and
the accident and the legal process had put his studies on hold.

"My furlough is almost over, I hope that the judges understand my situation,"
he said.

After the accident, he said, he gave blood money to the family and promised to
fund the education of the victim's child until university. He also paid all the
medical bills of the injured parties.

Rasyid is charged under Article 310 of the 2009 Traffic and Transportation Law
with causing the death and injury through reckless driving, which carries a
maximum penalty of six years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rp 12 million
(US$1,200). (hrl)
