People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker Taufik Kiemas said on Monday he
would not run in the 2014 legislative election.

“One thing is for sure I will not run in the upcoming legislative election, let
alone in the presidential election,” he said Monday.

Taufik also said that the presidential nominee from the Indonesian Democratic
Party of Struggle (PDI-P), where he is the chief patron, would be determined by
his wife, Megawati Soekarnoputri.

“The name of the presidential candidate is in Megawati’s hand, but I assure you
it will be a young politician,” he said.

Taufik said he had urged Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, who is also PDI-P cadre,
not to run in the presidential election.

“He [Joko] has stated he did not want to be forced [to run in the presidential
campaign], because he wanted to focus on fixing Jakarta,” he said.

Taufik had stated he does not approve of the possibility of his wife Megawati,
who was the president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004, running for president in
2014. Taufik said she would be better off making the decisions behind the
scenes, rather than joining the race again.

Previously, the PDI-P announced that the party’s cadres who were running in the
regional election, or wish to join the race, would not be allowed to run the
legislative election.

“Let them focus in the regional election first,” Tjahjo Kumolo, PDI-P secretary
general, said on Monday.
