The International Lawyers for West Papua Panel International Lawyers for West Papua (ILWP) is an international network of lawyers that has been created to raise awareness about West Papua and to present the legal case that West Papua has the right to self-determination under international law (see www.ilwp.org). The International Lawyers for West Papua Panel is researching the legal case for self-determination for the territory of West Papua and advocating for their cause. The Panel's 2011-2012 activities included: Compiling legal research looking into the plausibility of a legal case for West Papua Organising a talk by Benny Wenda, West Papua’s leader, at the Oxford Law Faculty, along with Charles Foster and Jen Robinson as other speakers, to understand the background and the current status of West Papua Conducting practical analysis of the obstacles and solutions towards assessing the self-determination right at the international forum This year, the panel hopes to organise a symposium for a comparative analysis of the various people fighting for self-determination, write to several nations to support the West Papua cause and strengthen the legal research and to gain support from famous personalities. West Papuans have a genuine cause and theirs is a difficult battle – one that requires the support of every conscious soul. For wrong to any one people anywhere in the globe is the wrong to humanity everywhere. This is an area where there is a dearth of literature relatively speaking, thus it’s in most need of talent and passion!
