Social issues find space on modern canvas
One current trend visible in the art market is the manner in which artists
are getting influenced by urban issues and complexities. This includes the
massive transformation of the urban landscape, which is triggering
behavioural and attitudinal changes. Macro phenomena like global violence,
religious marginalisation, political and social tensions and vulgar
commercialisation are surfacing in the works of artists. Paintings,
sculptures, installations and video art are also dealing with migration from
rural areas to cities and abuse of the eco-system.

"All these factors are a part of contemporary times and do not belong to any
particular region or country. It's universal in character. Therefore, these
works by contemporary artists, which reflect these facets, enjoy a
tremendous international connect. International collectors and buyers are
showing deep interest in these creations and are often picking them up," a
collector source told ET.

This feature in the art world became apparent over the past two years. In
fact, these works came for auctions during this phase and became popular and
are in demand. This is also underlined by the sale prices notched up by
works in this genre.

"Artists belonging to this category are capturing the modern times. It's
like freezing a series of moments. The works will have their own historical
relevance and value," the source said. Artists who are spearheading this
trend are Subodh Gupta, Jagannath Panda, Riyas Komu, Valsan Kolleri, Apurva
Desai, Murli Cherooth, Gigi Scaria, Veer Munshi, John CF, Pratul Dash and TV
Santosh. Delhi's Art Alive Gallery has unfurled a show, 'Urgent
Conversations', featuring contemporary works.

"The show revolves around concerns relating to erosion of traditional
aesthetics and morals in the face of vulgar commercialisation," the source
said. The exhibit embraces screening of director Buddhadeb Dasgupta's film
Uttara which explores the layers of social exploitation.
