[sigh] All I've changed (I think!) was to have the IOIO identify itself as a controller device, which in some cases actually solved the problem of being undetectable. Turns out this isn't a silver bullet that works for everything.
I wouldn't assume this is a Gingerbread problem, because most problems of this sort happen on specific devices as opposed to on all devices using this Android version. If you want a v5 working with your Gingerbread device, I can guide you on how to roll-back this specific change in firmware (assuming you're OK with building the firmware yourself).
