There are several boards that can connect to Android devices. Most of them
are fundamentally different than the IOIO in that all they provide you is a
bare-metal microcontroller with some library code to open a communication
channel to Android. This is usually over USB and not Bluetooth. Definitely
not seamless to switch between the two.
With those boards, you'd have to write both the Android side code and the
code running on the microcontroller. In order to make it as reliable as the
IOIO, you'd probably need to spend quite some effort. It took me a lot of
time to figure out all the nitty-gritty quirks of Android.

Why are you concerned with the durability of the IOIO?
