IOIO newb, so I may have missed something obvious.

I got my new IOIO-OTG and was glad to see that plugging it into a soldered
together USB cable and spare 5V power source got me the happy red light
without any serious solder burns.
Then I wanted to make sure I was starting out with the latest firmware, so
I successfully used the instructions for IOIODude
<https://github.com/ytai/ioio/wiki/IOIO-OTG-Bootloader-and-IOIODude> app to
update the firmware. (Side note: great instructional page, thank you!)
Then I wanted to see that the update worked, so I tried to follow the part
of the page "If you try this command when the IOIO is connected, but NOT in
bootloader mode, and you are running the standard firmware, the output of
this command will tell you which version of the application you have
installed"

However, got stuck here. When I jump the boot pin to ground, then plug it
in to my mac, it shows up as a "ls /dev/tty.usb*" device. When I *don't*
put it in boot mode and plug it in, it still lights up... but never shows
up as a tty device. Is it possible it has something to do with

   - the cable type? (I am guessing not because the firmware update
   worked... right?)
   - it needing external power to tell it to be in a certain device vs.
host mode? (Didn't think this would matter with the switch set to 'A'uto).
   - Any other possibilities?
