Thanks for the idea.
I had a few minutes this morning, and verified the switch works properly,
when measured at its pins.  The connection between the switch's middle pin
and the USB connector soldered pin is also fine.  I also verified the
testpoint's state, and it's correct.
Next, I'll extend the test--to the PIC and to a device hanging onto the USB
port.
