Hi Barry, I have a lot of Java experience, but I find the Android difficult. The IOIO is the easy part. Arduino is basically stand alone, so simpler to program. IOIO is specifically for the telephone, and if you need the telephone (which I do), then IOIO is a great choice. It does all the i/o for you which isn't included in Android.
So if you want to control your son's RC car through the telephone, it is probably worth the effort to get it going.
