I think window managers are gradually including internal support for it. Agreed, the shadows and all that stuff are pretty much cruft, but I think the transparency would be nice. I tried using xcompmgr with ion3, but just got a lot of X request code errors (don't have them here, can send them later if necessary). I have no idea how many changes this involves though.
