I have begun using Ion3 recently, having used ratpoison for the last year or so. I do like it a great deal and have enjoyed the added dimension of the statusbar. However, after a week or so of usage something came to my attention. I like to run a monitor whenever possible to keep an eye on my available RAM and so on, and with the statusbar or dock in Ion I can do that. Using this facility I noticed that in Ion the CPU is never at 0% usage. In Fluxbox, which I did at one time use, if something was not running actively the CPU would stay at 0% almost constantly. I wondered if this was just Flux and so switched to ratpoison and checked there and found that it also would run generally at 0% when nothing was actively running. However, Ion3 runs at 3-12% when completely idle, having no open windows and no processes initiated since starting the X session. I thought perhaps it was the monitors, though I used those in Flux and had no noticeable CPU activity, and so turned it all off, except of course one to watch the CPU usage, only to find it still ran in the same range.
I am curious as to what Ion is doing all the time? I will admit I am not sure if this is really an issue, but I like to see things get a chance to rest when not being used. The idea of my machine constantly using the CPU without any work going on gives me pause. Are there any thoughts? Many thanks, Patrick
