Not sure if you're serious or not, but I've had this problem on a system that was never touched by any gnome or gnome-like software. To the OP: Make sure that X11 is installing all it's fonts. Some recent xorg-x11 packages on some linux distributions disable the install of these fonts. Failing that, you can make helvetica an alias to an installed font. mike -- "I like to say 'quark'!
