Oh, and in the particular case of Helvetica and Xft software, sh^Wfontconfig at least on some distros tends to have all sorts of hacks to *prevent one from using Helvetica*, replacing it with some really ugly fonts that don't raster well at all thanks to the insanity of the tyranny known as patents.
