MacOS X grabbing my arrow key input, as they work just fine in every
other application running under the control of the ion window manager.
Furthermore, I don't expect that it is something to do with my choice
"F5", as the menu does come up and as far as I know nothing else in the
system is hooked into "F5".

I have noticed the same under Windows with the Hummingbird Exceed X
Window System. I use the default keybindings, so the F5 choice seems
unrelated. Because I seldom use Ion under Windows I've never bothered to
investigate.
I should also note that I don't have any problem when using the Cygwin
X server to run ion3 via XDMCP under Windows. So maybe this is just
specific to some X servers. However, I thought Apple's X11 was based
upon the same XFree/Xorg code-base as the Cygwin X server.
