direct rendering

Hello.  I use Debian Etch.  I have Gnome, and Ion3 installed.  I prefer 
Ion3, because I like using the keyboard.  However, direct rendering of 
my video card does not work in Ion3, whereas it does work in Gnome.  
Because of this, there is no benefit that is realized from Ion3 using 
less system resouces than Gnome.  I have an old card (Mach 64 3D Rage 
Pro).  To get direct rendering working I had to install a driver from 
http://dri.freedesktop.org/, since Debian doesn't include this driver.  
On Gnome it works:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
But it does not work in Ion3.  Any hints how I can get direct rendering 
of my video card to work in Ion3?
