I found what I was doing wrong
I was entering
$ startx ion3
so inadvertently starting two window managers (my xinitrc file was pointing
to enlightenment). Once I'd edited my xinitrc file to become
exec /usr/local/bin/ion3
then typing
$ startx
loaded ion3 and gave me full control, including letting me open several
fully functional terminal displays with xterm and rxvt :)

I am a newbie to Unix so this may be a very simple problem to fix but each
time I try to start an new xterm or rxvt in Ion3 I get this message
appearing in the new window
ion startup error log:
Unable to redirect root window events for screen 0
Refusing to start due to encountered errors
how do I fix this ?
hampa xp asked a similar question on this list in 2001 but I didn't see
any
answering replies in the gmane archives and the only hits that google
supplies for "Unable to redirect root window events for screen 0" appear
to be in french.
I am running the ion3 package on OpenBSD 3.9 amd64.
